Officer William Murdoch puts the ship's propellers at full stop and gives the command "Hard to starboard", but they do not avoid the iceberg. The Titanic only has 37 seconds to react from the moment the iceberg is seen until they hit it. 02.20: Titanic disappears below sea level, leaving over 1000 people in the icy sea. About 500 are believed to have never reached the ship.
